Vitamin C can help strengthen your immune system during cold and flu season.
What Does Vitamin C Do?
Vitamin C is vital to immune function. The body requires high levels of Vitamin C to fight infection. Vitamin C deficiency may occur if it not replaced. (source: Food Technol 41, 112-114, 1987.)
The body also exhibits lowered levels of Vitamin C during periods of chemical, emotional and physiological stress, thereby increasing the body’s need for increased Vitamin C intake. Chemical stresses include cigarette smoke, pollutants and allergens. (source: Nutr. Health 1, 66-77, 1982.)
Vitamin C’s beneficial effects are improved when consumed in combination with other nutritional antioxidants, especially Vitamin E, selenium and beta-carotene. Studies have shown combinations of antioxidants to be more effective than individual nutrients. (source: Nutr. Cancer 20, 145-151, 1993.)
Since Vitamin C is not produced naturally by the body, it must be taken in by eating fruits and vegetables, and/or through vitamin supplements.
